Chapter 11

Asmall part of Wren died inside as she heard the gunfire. She knew that Robyn would only use her Glock if there were no other options and this told her that the infected had breached the barricade and it would not be long before they were on their tails.

She glanced back to see a steady line of people behind her. She was deliberately not travelling too fast, instead making sure that the freed captives kept up.

“It’s going to take a while to get people over that fence,” Lana said. “And if those things have broken through, I don’t think we’ll have that long.”

Wren didn’t answer for a moment as she processed her words. It’s true. If those things are right behind us, there’s no way we’re going to be able to get everybody out of here.

“We need to get everyone to the fence; then you and I need to try to hold them off for as long as we can.”

“Um … didn’t you say that if I fire this—”

“I know what I said, Lana. I was hoping that barricade might hold a bit longer, but it obviously hasn’t. That means we’re already in last-resort territory. That means we fight with whatever we have available to us.”

“I think I feel sick.”

“Don’t worry. You get used to it.”

“What the hell are you doing?” Seri demanded as Robyn skidded to a stop before the door.

Robyn turned to see the first of the creatures almost over the mountain of debris with more piling through behind. She placed the Glock in the back of her jeans and tore a flap off a discarded cardboard box, immediately folding it once, twice, three times into a wedge shape. She and Seri barged the door open and Seri flicked on her torch while Robyn dropped to her knees and jammed the wedge of cardboard into the slim gap beneath.

No sooner was she on her feet again than a tremulous bang sounded against it, shifting the heavy wood a couple of centimetres, allowing a thin slip of daylight into the corridor with the first creature’s furious growls to accompany it.

“It won’t hold long,” Robyn said, “but it’s something.” She set off at a run once more with Seri behind her. She burst through the fire door and looked around for something to block it with, but other than a couple of wheelie bins that wouldn’t stop a dozen mice, never mind a horde of infected, there was nothing.

“Come on.” It was Seri who gave the order now, reading Robyn’s mind as the younger woman scoured her surroundings, looking in vain for something to barricade the exit with.

Robyn was about to pull the bow from her shoulder when she grabbed her Glock once more instead. When these things finally broke through, it wouldn’t matter about the silence of the bow. All that would matter was survival in their last-ditch attempt to escape.

Dammit! Why couldn’t that door have held for another minute?

“So far so good,” Wren said, coming to a stop at the end of another caravan.
